The Mitutoyo 157-902 optical parallel is constructed of optical-grade glass and can measure the parallelism and flatness of a micrometer’s measuring face. When used with a monochromatic light, a Mitutoyo optical parallel can determine the measuring surface parallelism within 0.2µm/.000008” and flatness within 0.1µm/.000004” on micrometers. Our optical parallels are precision polished and lapped for exceptional flatness in our Japanese factories.

Parallelism check between measuring faces by means of interference fringe produced by an optical parallel.
The parallelism between the measuring faces can be determined as follows:
Place the optical parallel to the anvil and observe the number of interference fringes produced on the spindle side under the measuring force of the micrometers.
The parallelism is about 1µm (0.32µm x 3 = 0.96µm).
Fringe on the anvil side must not be more than one.
